Finalists 2010 Performance Car of the Year

The new Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.
The 911 GT3 R Hybrid using hybrid technology fitted in the car was developed by the Williams Formula One team using the kinetic energy stored in the flywheel featured in the interior next to the driver rather than conventional chemical batteries. The flywheel itself is an electric motor with a rotor that spins up to 40,000 rpm, storing mechanical energy combined with generative braking within 7 seconds the power sent to the electric motor. The energy storage system was originally developed for use in Williams Formula One team but now focused on applications in road vehicles.

The 911 GT3 R Hybrid has two electric motors at the front axle, each developing 80 brake horsepower (60 kW) driving the front wheels to supplements the 480 brake horsepower (360 kW) four-litre flat-six engine at the rear. When braking, the car converts kinetic energy into electrical energy and stores it in the flywheel. When drivers accelerates, energy is automatically delivered to the front wheels, supports combustion engine. This causes the reduction of fuel consumption and increases the cruising range. The driver can manually utilize stored energy with the boost paddle on the steering wheel to accelerate the out of the bend or when overtaking.
