The efforts of the Chevy Volt to receive the award Green Car Journal’s 2011 Green Car of the Year® at the L.A. Auto Show was not without challenges, Volt had to compete with 4 other finalists included an electric car the Nissan LEAF, 2 Hybrid cars, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and also a sporty hatchback car, the Ford Fiesta. With the award 2011 Green Car of the year means the Chevrolet Volt has got rid of his rival the high-tech battery electric car, Nissan LEAF and end the nomination of 2-year diesel car’s winning which are the Volkswagen Jetta TDI (Auto Show in 2008) and the Audi A3 TDI (Auto Show in 2009). According to General Motors, the Volt which provides a practical electric vehicle is a technological transformation that will lead the automotive industry into a new era of the vehicle electrification.

Chevrolet Volt was chosen as the winner by environmental and automotive experts along with Green Car Journal editors including the leaders of the nation’s top environmental organizations which are the president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, Frances Beinecke; president of Global Green USA, Matt Petersen; chairman of the Sierra Club, Carl Pope and president of Ocean Futures Society, Jean-Michel Cousteau besides the host of the “Tonight Show” as a car enthusiast, Jay Leno as well as automotive icon Carroll Shelby who joined the Green Car Journal editors.

The awards 2011 The Green Car of the Year for the Chevrolet Volt is the first award received by an electric car and a new chapter in the green car and driving trends in the future, cars with increased efficiency, reduce air quality impacts and replace the use of petroleum. Chevrolet Volt is a new type of electric car that offers extended range electric driving after a car battery runs out, made possible by the existence of Voltec propulsion system capable of providing 25 to 50 miles of all electric driving on a single charge before a gasoline-powered on-board generator provides electricity to power the cars for an additional 300 miles. This is to help eliminate anxiety for the fear of battery-powered electric cars.

Green Car of the Year Award (The GCOY Award) is an award given by the Green Car Journal with a mission for environmental progress in the automotive industry, in contrast with the World Green Car of the Year Award which is part of the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) Award.
